James Stumpff successfully defended his PhD dissertation on December 7, 2023. He gave an amazing presentation detailing our discovery of a role for pleural macrophages in the resolution of influenza. He is the first PhD graduate of the Morrison Lab.
Not only is this an achievement for Dr. Stumpff and the Morrison Lab, it is also a triumph for the Native American community. Unfortunately, due to the history of discrimination and exploitation of the indigenous people of America, less than 0.5% of doctoral degrees granted in the United States are earned by Native Americans (Statista.com).
James's dissertation research was recently accepted to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), and we'll post the link once it is formally published.
Good job, Dr. Stumpff!
